Total Public Debt

Total Public Debt

Kenya’s public debt includes the external debt, domestic debt and publicly guaranteed debt. As at end April 2021, the outstanding total public and publicly guaranteed debt was Kshs. 7,246.9 billion. This reflected a 11 percent growth in the overall debt over the period under review. Domestic debt increased by Kshs 455.4 billion (or by 14.3 per cent) from Kshs 3,177.5 billion to Kshs 3,632.9 billion while external debt (including guaranteed debt) increased from Kshs 3,515.8 billion to Kshs 3,778.1 billion reflecting an increase of Kshs 262.3 billion (or 7.5 percent growth rate) over the period under review. The increase in external debt was largely due to growth in multilateral debt and depreciation of the shilling against hard currencies. The change in overall debt composition show an aggregate rise in debt over the review period.
